Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder because it affects you and your health around the clock. Sleep apnea is a disorder that causes your breathing to stop and start repeatedly throughout the night. It is usually accompanied with loud snoring or choking sounds. Sleep apnea is caused by overly relaxed muscles in the back of the throat. When the muscles are relaxed, your airway will cave in while you inhale, making it difficult to breathe. You may or may not realize that you are stopping and starting to breathe all night long. If you suspect this disorder, ou should look for the following symptoms of sleep apnea:

  • Loud snoring
  • Shortness of breath
  • Frequent nighttime awakenings
  • Headache in the morning
  • Dry mouth or sore throat in the morning
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Irritability or anxiety

If the symptoms above are familiar, you may want to see your physician. Sleep apnea can lead to problems including:

  • Inability to concentrate or be productive
  • Sleepless partner
  • Heightened moodiness
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart problems
  • Liver problems
  • Diabetes
